How first mention works in practice.

The first mention is the first date the accused appears in the Magistrates' Court after a charge has been filed. At a first mention the court will confirm that the accused is present or represented, ask about representation and the likelihood of a plea, and set the matter down for a future date. The accused is not required to enter a plea at the first mention. If bail conditions apply, compliance may also be noted at this appearance.
