How adjournment works in practice.

An adjournment is a postponement of a court date. In criminal matters in the Victorian Magistrates' Court, adjournments are granted for a range of reasons, including to allow the accused to obtain legal representation, to allow time for the prosecution brief to be served, to allow for further negotiations between the parties, or because the court's list is too full to hear the matter on the day. Applications for adjournments are made to the magistrate at the mention or hearing date. Courts generally expect adjournments to be kept to a minimum, particularly in summary matters.
