How mention hearing works in practice.

A mention hearing is an administrative court date in the Victorian Magistrates' Court. No evidence is heard and no final decision is made. The court uses the mention to check the status of the matter, confirm whether the accused has legal representation, set the next hearing date, and receive pleas or applications. Most criminal matters begin with a first mention and may return for several subsequent mentions before a contested hearing or plea hearing is set.
