How intervention order works in practice.

An intervention order is a civil protective order made by the Magistrates' Court. Family violence intervention orders are governed by the Family Violence Protection Act 2008 (Vic) and are made where the court is satisfied that family violence has occurred or is likely to occur. Personal safety intervention orders are governed by the Personal Safety Intervention Orders Act 2010 (Vic). Both types of order impose conditions from the moment they are served; contravening the order is a criminal offence. An accused person can contest an intervention order at a hearing. Being served with an interim order does not mean the full order will be made.
