How sex offenders register works in practice.

The Sex Offenders Registration Act 2004 (Vic) establishes a register of people found guilty of certain sexual offences, particularly offences involving children. A registrable offender must report specified personal information to Victoria Police and keep it current for a reporting period, which can range from a number of years to life depending on the offences involved. Registration can follow on a finding of guilt for a listed offence, separately from the sentence the court imposes. Because registration is a significant and long-lasting consequence, whether an offence is registrable is an important consideration when advising on how to respond to a sexual offence charge.
